Nursery rhymes have benefits for language development in children even as young as 0-3 years. These include: phonological awareness - rhyming words, alliteration and syllabification; increase in vocabulary; the slower rate of speech encourages clearer articulation; encouraging rhythmic flow that results in more fluent speech - the ability to maintain a steady beat is strong predictor of reading ability.
