Katherine Edwards Middle School STEAM & Dual Immersion Academy serves approximately 756 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. Ninety-three precent of the students are Hispanic, 4% White, and 3% are other ethnicities. Approximately 10% of the total student body are classified as English Language Learners and about 79% of the students receive Free and Reduced lunch. The majority of the students live within walking distance of the school although some of our students are bused in from Pellisier area. Six elementary schools feed into Edwards at the conclusion of the 5th grade: West Whittier Dual Language Academy, Phelan Dual Language Academy, Mill School of Technology, Orange Grove Elementary School, Jackson Elementary School, and Sorensen Science Academy. Approximately 50% of Edwards graduates attend Pioneer High School and 50% attend Whittier High School. Edwards parents represent a vast array of occupations, with 70% of the parents holding a high school diploma, and 30% having attended some college and/or received a college degree. The Edwards staff is passionate in insuring the parents are not only involved, but engaged in their children's education. District resources have been dedicated to providing a parent liaison to facilitate interactions between parents and the school site and to increase communication with the home. The school maintains and open door policy to carefully establish and maintain the vital line of communication between the home and school. Edwards recognizes that parents are an important component in every child's future.
