"Mary Had a Little Lamb" is an English language nursery rhyme of nineteenth-century American origin. The nursery rhyme was first published by the Boston publishing firm Marsh, Capen & Lyon, as a poem by Sarah Josepha Hale on May 24, 1830, and was possibly inspired by an actual incident.
Mary had a little lamb, Its fleece was white as snow, And every where that Mary went The lamb was sure to go ; He followed her to school one day That was against the rule, It made the children laugh and play, To see a lamb at school.
The rhyme was the first audio recorded by Thomas Edison on his newly invented phonograph in 1877.
