- Dietary guidance for <chronic illness>? e.g., “ask My Dietitian for dietary guidance for high blood pressure”; or What are the best foods for <condition>? e.g., “ask My Dietitian what are the best foods for diabetes?” The response to this type of request will be a list of helpful items. My Dietitian knows about 34 most common chronic illnesses and their alternate names e.g., hypertension for high blood pressure.
- What are the worst things for <condition>? e.g., “ask My Dietitian what are the worst things for gout?”. The response will be a list of harmful items to avoid.
- What are the best <food group> for <condition>? Examples: “ask My Dietitian what are the best fish for breast cancer?”; "ask my dietitian what are the best nuts (or best fruits, or best snacks) for ulcers (or polycystic ovary syndrome, or cancer prevention)?" My Dietitian recognizes eighteen different food groups. The answer to this type of request will be a list of most helpful items within the selected food group for the specified condition.
- You can ask for the list of supported chronic illnesses via “ask my Dietitian to list the conditions”. My Dietitian will respond by listing the conditions, one small group at a time. The complete list is as follows: Alzheimer’s Disease, Breast Cancer, Calcium oxalate kidney stones, Cancer Prevention, Celiac Disease, Cervical Cancer, Chronic Kidney Disease, Colon Cancer, Crohn’s disease, Depression, Diabetes Type 2, Esophageal Cancer, Excess Weight (or obesity), Genital Herpes, Gout, Heart Disease (Hardening of the arteries), High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, High Triglycerides, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Lung Cancer, Lupus (SLE), Macular Degeneration, Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, Ovarian Cancer, Painful Bladder Syndrome (or Interstitial Cystitis), Pancreatic Cancer, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Prostate Cancer, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Stomach Cancer, Ulcers (Peptic ulcer) and Vitamin D Deficiency.
- You can ask for the list of food groups via “ask My Dietitian to list the food groups”. The list of food groups: fish & seafood; meat; poultry & fowl; eggs; beans & legumes; nuts & seeds; fruits & juices; vegetables; breads, grains, cereals & pasta; dairy products; fats & oils; sweets & snacks; beverages; herbs, spices & sauces; fast & prepared foods; alternative therapies (e.g., Yoga); vitamins & minerals; and herbal supplements (e.g., Psyllium).
The serving size assumption for all food groups is 100 grams or 3.5 ounces except for the following: 30 grams or one ounce for nuts, seeds and dried fruits; one cup for juices and soups; 20 grams or one TBS for fats, oils, sauces and condiments; one cup or can for drinks, five ounces for wine and 1.5 ounces for hard liquor; and two grams or a pinch for dried herbs and spices.
