Its overall plot outline is written by Dragon Ball franchise creator Akira Toriyama, and is a sequel to his original Dragon Ball manga and the Dragon Ball Z television series featuring the first new storyline in 18 years. Dragon Ball Super
is the fourth anime installment in the Dragon Ball franchise, which ran from July 5th, 2015 to March 25th, 2018.[1][2] It is set between Dragon Ball Z episodes 288 and 289 and is the first Dragon Ball television series featuring a new storyline in 18 years since the final episode of Dragon Ball GT in 1997.
The series' plot begins showing the aftermath of the Majin Buu Saga, then proceeds to retell and alter the stories of Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ as new story arcs. The next part of Super following this takes place in the Universe 6 with the Dragon Team searching for the Super Dragon Balls.
Dragon Ball Super follows the adventures of Goku and his friends after defeating Majin Buu and bringing peace to Earth once again. Goku encounters beings far more powerful and defends the Earth against a powerful destructive deity. He attains the power of a god and learns his newly discovered powers under the gods of his universe. Goku travels to other universes to face more powerful opponents as well as nearly unstoppable foes. A theatrical film titled Dragon Ball Super: Broly was released in 2018, and an ONA called Super Dragon Ball Heroes, based on the events prior to the film and the arcade game of the same name, started airing in July 2018.
Dragon Ball Super is also a manga illustrated by artist Toyotarou, who was previously responsible for the official Resurrection 'F' manga adaptation.[50] Toyotarou explained that he receives the major plot points from Toriyama, before drawing the storyboard and filling in the details in between himself. He sends the storyboard to Toriyama for review, who edits the initial draft, making dialogue and art changes, before sending it back to Toyotarou, who illustrates the final draft and sends it to Shueisha for publication.[51] It began serialization in the August 2015 issue of V Jump, which was released on June 20, 2015.[52] In November 2018, the manga passed the end-point of the anime and began telling an original story.[53] Shueisha began collecting the chapters into tankōbon volumes with the first published on April 4, 2016.[54] Viz Media began posting free English translations of the manga chapters to their website on June 24, 2016.[55] A print release of the first volume followed in spring 2017.[56]
The animated film, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, is the first film in the franchise to be produced under the Dragon Ball Super title. The film was released on December 14, 2018. It is a continuation to the series that will act as a new arc. A poster showcasing the film's new art style was released on March 12, 2018.[57] A teaser depicting Goku facing off against Broly was released a week later.[58][59] The first trailer was released at San Diego Comic-Con International 2018.[60] The second trailer was released on October 4, 2018. The English version of the second trailer was released on October 5, 2018. A second untitled Dragon Ball Super film is confirmed to be in pre-production as of June 4, 2019, by Toei executive Akio Iyoku.
