A Byte of Style is a weekly review of fashions integrated with technology that Shimira Williams co-creates with makers. Over the past five years, Williams has been partnering with makers in the City of Pittsburgh to work with youth to co-create fashions embed technology through an initiative The Beauty of S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
Williams created The Beauty of S.T.E.M. while operating a home-based child care facility. A youth's desire for different programming, sparked the idea to interview fashion and beauty focused makers and entrepreneurs. Then, support from our local library provided the opportunity to host a fashion show which ignited an idea for a summer maker studio series. Over the years of hosting the program, Williams learned the program was not about the fashion or technology but the community which it fosters amongst the participants.
While shifting in her career, Williams also searched for a way to continue sharing her voice on technology and young children and building a community of youth makers. She decided to continue the conversation digitally at https://www.thebeautyofstem.com, whose RSS feed is the source of this Flash Briefing.
